How to start up business activity

Starting up business operations in Poland

Individual business operations can be registered in Poland with the district or city council for the place of residence. The first step is to submit an application for registration in the business activity register. An identical procedure applies to partners of civil law partnerships (which comprises two separate businesses working together to achieve a specific goal). It is also necessary to submit an application for a Statistical Identification Number (REGON) there. The district council notifies the entrepreneur of entering his/her business into the business register activity at latest within 14 days. The next step is to open a business bank account, have a stamp made, register a new payer of social security (pension, disability, accident, sickness and Labour Fund) contributions with the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) and to submit applications for Tax Identification and VAT numbers in the Revenue Office.

If you plan to have employees, it is necessary to notify the National Labour Inspectorate (PIP) as well as the Voivodship and Poviat Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations (Sanepid). The last step is to apply for any necessary licenses and permits.
